Tata’s Nano car, is indeed a revolution in Auto Industry. This car has been termed as “People’s car” or “Lakhtakiya Car” ( As it costs one lakh, 1 Lakh = 1/10 million, Indian rupees hence named LAKHTAKIYA).It would be better to briefly introduce the car before probing pros and cons of Nano. Although this car car does not have reclining seats or radio. And no power steering in the car. These technical classification does not sound good for those who can afford a big, luxury and expensive car but this car will definitely catch the eyes of masses in India who belongs to lower middle class and does not have adequate funds to fulfill their desire for a car. This car is criticized for many reasons. Few of them are: CONS: 1) Environmental issues: will it meet all emission norms as India is already the fourth largest producer of carbon emissions. Although Tata claims that this car will be less pollution produce compare to a two wheeler, means it fits on emission norms. 2.) Fuel consumption: Car will definitely consume more fuel than a 150 CC engine two-wheeler. Thus increasing demand for fuel and increase in import bills as well. India’s imports 70% of its crude oil. 3.) Safety concern: As this car does not carry air bag, so questions are rising on safety also. 4 ) Increased Traffic: Additional cars to the already-bursting vehicle population will worse the traffic problem.. Parking problems and accidents will also increase. 5) Limited Space: Space inside the car is less for keeping luggage Despite these problems we should not forget the benefits of this small and cheapest car of the world. PROS: 1) Price: the price of Tata Nano is approximately the double of a two wheeler and just half of the nearest competitive car Maruti 800. So, by just paying extra money, more people can afford this car. 2)It can be seen as a family car and definitely it is safe than any two wheeler like scooter, bikes. As 70 year old chairman of Tata industry Ratan Tata writes on the company website, “That’s what drove me — a man on a two-wheeler with a child standing in front, his wife sitting behind, add to that the wet roads — a family in potential danger,”. 3) In few states of India like Delhi, Rajasthan, where people faces extreme weather conditions like in summers temperature hits around 50C and in winter temperature goes down near 0C. Now people can think of going to their work with pleasure in all weathers in a decent way. 4.) Again the production plant will provide more employment to thousands of people. It is claimed that a plant in Singur, in eastern West Bengal state, is expected to employ 10,000 people. 5.) It is equally true that public transport in the country is woefully inadequate to meet the growing demand of commuters. Than there is left no chance to ride on two wheeler with heavy luggage and more than two people to reach their destination.. This is a major reason in India for two wheeler accidents…thx to Tata Nano. 6.) In future, success of the car may find markets outside of India and become a valuable export, boosting Tata and the country’s esteem. For lower middle class Tata nano will not be a luxury car but will be a necessity. According to the 2006/07 data with just 8 people in 1,000 owning a car in India, there is huge potential to upgrade bike and scooter owners to go with this car. Thanks to Tata Nano, that has broken ground on many different levels-in price, in size, in distribution, and technology. By using lighter steel, a smaller engine, and having longer-term sourcing agreements with parts suppliers, Tata was able to keep the price of the Nano down.
